The Orchid

Near Telegraph and Durant. The Orchid is a small Chinese restaurant outside Durant Square — the ‘Asian Ghetto’ — that is run by a family of Koreans. It’s a real hole-in-the-wall; the only indication of its existence is a small sign next to Gypsy’s, the Italian restaurant in the Ghetto.

The Orchid distinguishes itself from the stereotypical Asian Ghetto fare in two ways: it’s not dirt cheap, but the food is actually quite flavorful. If you’re grabbing a meal for yourself, get the Lunch Special — contrary to its name, it’s offered all day and should set you back $7. The dinner portions are generous, though, if you’re willing to shell out a little more cash.

The menu is pretty long and diverse, so there should be something that appeals to your taste. I recommend trying the walnut prawns, dry sauted chicken with garlic sauce, or Peking prawns.
