After creating a CO calibration curve, I decided to run some samples of car exhaust through the FTIR. I wondered if cigarette smoke had a higher concentration of CO. It did.
Of course, the concentration of CO in car exhaust depends upon the car; newer cars have better catalytic converters, which break down CO and convert into CO2. However, according to my preliminary results, it appears that practically all cigarettes produce smoke with higher CO concentrations than any type of car exhaust.
Why do people smoke?
