After going to bunch of Cal Day events, I realized that I hadn’t eaten in nearly 24 hours; all nighters can do that to you. Since I was at the northeast corner of campus, I decided to get dinner at the Foothill Dining Commons, which also happens to be the place where I normally eat meals.
As usual, the food wasn’t exactly appetizing, but then again, it wasn’t unsafe to eat. Or was it? For tonight’s dinner, a typical selection of items were available: steamed rice, marinated chicken, grilled salmon, and steamed vegetables. However, the problem was that tonight’s dinner consisted of exactly the same thing served last night.
At first I thought the dining staff had reached the ultimate in laziness: rather than trying to come up with a new menu, they had decided to use yesterday’s menu. But then I took a look at (and taste of) the food. The food was not as fresh as it was yesterday, and the salmon tasted slightly stale (for those that don’t know, fish ages a lot faster than most types of food). These two observations lead me to draw only one conclusion: I was served yesterday’s leftovers.
I’m not a law student nor am I knowledgeable in public health, but I think that serving day-old food is a major food safety violation. Food safety is especially important to me because I have a sensitive stomach; I don’t want any stomach pains interrupting my study this weekend. Furthermore, I am concerned because mishaps like these contribute to the belief (and valid fact) that Cal dining just sucks.
