Yay! I really must be a nerd (and/or pretty bored) to be excited about this…
But I finally got some Slashdot moderator points! Now I just gotta find some neglected posts to mod up (or down)…
As an aside, I think moderator points are an ingenious idea. It’s an organic and democratic filter system: interesting and insightful posts are highlighted, and trolls and flames are hidden away. While this idea might not please those who believe in the absolute right to freedom of speech and a total lack of censorship, it does benefit the majority of the population (well, the population that reads the website).
It’s the idea of user moderation that draws me to Slashdot. It’s also one of the greatest strengths of Drupal. If moderation was always performed by the same set of individuals, bias would inevitably develop. However, by rotating moderation among the user population, all opinions are given a chance (well, except in those cases where the entire user population strongly holds the same opinion, such as those regarding a certain Redmond-based company).
It’s not a perfect system, but hey, it’s not a perfect world. Of course, there’s always the problem of the dumb masses, but that discussion is for another day…
