Yay! Sleep

I’ve been catching up on a lot of sleep this weekend. Yesterday, I woke up at 11 AM and slept at 10 PM. Today, I woke up at 10 AM. That’s about 12 hours of sleep each day. If that’s not a lot for you, I envy your life.

Like most hardcore Berkeley engineers, I feel that time is too precious of a commodity to be wasted on sleep. In addition, by the time I’m done with studying and homework every night, I usually only have 2-3 hrs of free time that are available for sleep. As such, I often choose to forgo sleep to get some more studying done.

I know that missing sleep is bad, but learning, for me, is a more important concern (that’s why I’m in college, right?). Besides, it’s hard to think of the long-term when so many things are occuring in the short-term. A lack of sleep usually doesn’t result in too many immediate effects - well, nothing that a pot of tea or coffee couldn’t solve. On the other hand, a lack of studying usually results in a bad grade on the week’s math quiz or midterm.

I admit that my schedule might be a little different from many college students. For most of this semester, I’ve averaged one midterm every week. In fact, I actually signed up for more units than was recommended (so why am I complaining?). However, considering how competitive things are around here and in the real world, many students do what I did; everybody wants more than JUST one major. Consequently, what is actually an abnormal schedule becomes quite normal.

Yet, I got lucky this week. No midterms for one complete week. I have nothing major due on Monday either, so I was able to use the weekend for sleep. Too bad that my luck will only last for 7 days - I have a midterm the following Monday and Thursday.

Oh yeah, CALDAY is this Saturday. If anybody is interested in visiting Berkeley, Saturday would be the best day of the year to visit. It’s basically a university-wide open house.
